Nelson Mandela: July 18, 1918 - December 5, 2013

Receiving the Nobel Peace Prize

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

- Nelson Mandela

Oh Canada... It's DexCom time!

The DexCom G4 continuous glucose monitor is now available in the true north! I'm not exactly sure how DexCom got their device ready for sale in Canada. Perhaps the transmitter will be wearing a tiny little hockey sweater? Who knows...

Getting started looks pretty straightforward. Go to dexcom.com/en-ca and then click "Contact Distributor". The link takes you to www.animas.ca, the company that is handling the distribution for Canada. The Animas page doesn't have any DexCom specific links. I would use the "Contact Us" tab at the top right of the Animas page and ask how to get started.

I found this contact information for Animas Canada at the bottom of the Canadian DexCom page linked above.

Local Dexcom Distributor

I'm so excited for my Canadian friends, you are going to love having a CGM!

Link between Type I Diabetes and Coxsackie B Virus

I found this article particularly interesting because Arden was diagnosed with the Coxsackie virus prior to her diagnosis with type I diabetes. I was wondering how many of you also saw Coxsackie before type I?

The following is from The Scotsman.

A SPECIFIC virus family has been implicated in the development of Type 1 diabetes, raising the prospect of vaccinations against the disease. -

  • by JOHN VON RADOWITZ

Scientists are encouraged by data from two studies that show a clear link between the condition and group B coxsackieviruses, which are known to damage insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

The potential breakthrough relates to type 1 diabetes which affects around 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of whom are children.

Researchers believe that, in time, it may be that with screening and a vaccine, they could prevent a proportion of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease caused by the body’s defences destroying insulin-producing beta cells. But what triggers the extreme immune reaction in the first place has been an unanswered question.

Suspicion has fallen on enteroviruses, one of the most common infective agents in humans. They include the virus responsible for the common cold, as well as those responsible for polio and viral meningitis.

The new study narrowed the diabetes culprit down to one particular enterovirus population known as group B coxsackieviruses.

The remainder of this article a valuable read and can be found here.

New OmniPod Training Site has been UPDATED

Insulet has launched MyOmnipodTraining.com, a site for new and current OmniPod users. The site has a video (bottom of this page) that speaks about the new smaller pods, a FAQ section, tutorials and a rich resource section that houses a bunch of information including this CareGiver Guide.

Just added to the Resource section of the site today, June 4, links to the New OmniPod Interactive Training Module online and PDF version.

Also just added, this New OmniPod Training Video: The New OmniPod System: Quick Start Training

I don't have any official knowledge, but I'd bet my car that this is it... It's coming people!

My Newspaper Interview with the Deseret News

The Deseret News is a well respected, national publication and I am very excited to be a part of their piece, 'More dads staying home with the kids while mom works'...

Scott Benner told his wife she should quit working and stay home with their new baby. But she had the better career path. So he stayed home and 13 years later, he's practically a pioneer in a trend that keeps growing: The stay-at-home dad.

I hope that you have a few minutes to hop over to their site and read the interview by Lois Collins. Sharing via the newspaper's website is greatly appreciated.
